Where do I park my bike?

Most businesses in El Cerrito make no provision to park electric cargo bikes that can cost $1,500 to $8,000. The explosive sales of e-bikes as popular consumer products has started in just the last ten years. Between 2020 and 2023, 130 million electric bicycles are expected to be sold worldwide. Compounded annual growth rate in sales is at 7.49%. In El Cerrito, where most residents live within easy bicycling distance to local businesses, the potential for bicycling access to retail and services is high. People in our area are buying electric cargo bikes at accelerating rates. But to a consumer who purchased an e-bike hoping it would replace car trips, it is a rude awakening to find little acknowledgement from businesses that their business is valued. Whatever the cost of a bicycle—powerful electric cargo bike or old beater bike—businesses are leaving money on the table by ignoring patrons who arrive on bicycles.

These photos show valuable shopping destinations in El Cerrito that have no useful and secure bike parking. These businesses are not hostile to bicycle riders, but rather appear oblivious to them.


This shopping center with 12 businesses and 79 parking spaces, has no bike parking visible and easily accessible from shop entrances.



This 725 foot-long city block with nine businesses, has parking for 85 cars, yet only two bike racks 510 feet apart.


Drug stores are essential destinations for everyone.These three in El Cerrito have no visible bicycle parking.

OUT IN THE WORLD WITHOUT A CAR: The Spring Ride

By Laura Lent Since 2002 I have been part of an informal group of friends who go on an annual bike tour we call the "Spring Ride."  We've bike camped our way from the Antioch BART station to Yosemite and various Sierra foothill destinations, we've gone north and south along the coast, and we've taken AMTRAK to Bakersfield and ridden north through Carrizo Plain. HURRAH FOR USABLE BIKE RACKS! El Cerrito Natural Foods

What is an essential destination for daily living, a place that sustains basic metabolic life? A grocery store! How should you get there if you can't afford a car?
